OKR template: the OKR canvas

One sheet that holds a complete OKR set – strategy and KPIs at the top, objective, key results and tasks below. Built by OKR Experten for their own workshops, available as a PDF from Companion Pro.

Structure

What the template contains

Three areas, from strategy down to delivery.

HeaderCompany, organisation, department or team, author, date and the number of the OKR set – so it stays clear later whose set it is and which cycle it came from.

Strategy (1–5 years)The strategic initiative or focus the set is derived from, next to up to three key performance indicators. The link to strategy sits on the same sheet.

OKR set (typically 3 months)One objective, up to four key results – two of them optional – and on the right the tasks, activities, initiatives and projects you use to get there.

Building blocks as a guideThe bottom left carries the sentence templates for objective and key results plus the four properties of a good key result, so you can phrase them properly right at the poster.

Objective: We have achieved <target state> for <role> [by <date>], [through <approach>], so that <outcome>.
Key result: We have increased or reduced <metric> from <baseline> to <target>, [through <approach>], so that <outcome>.

A key result is good when it measures an effect – the outcome, not the output and not the input – is quantitative, stays within the team's influence and does not overlap with the others. At least one of them should be a leading indicator that makes the effect visible early. For fully written sets, see the OKR examples.

Use

Print it or use it digitally

The same template for the room and for the whiteboard.

As a poster: the canvas is laid out for large-format printing. Order it as a poster in double A0 landscape (1590 × 1135 mm), colour on one side (4/0), for example at wir-machen-druck.de. On the wall that leaves enough room for sticky notes in the key result and task fields.

On a digital board: load the PDF into Miro, Mural or Conceptboard and place it as the background. The sticky notes then go on top digitally, and the structure stays the same.

Either way, the advice from practice holds: think on the poster or board first, then move the finished sets into your tool. How the results get into OKR Companion – by phone camera or screenshot – is described under OKR workshop.
